What is Hardcourt Bike Polo?

The simplest way to explain it; hockey on bicycles.

2 teams, 3 players per team, everyone on a bike. You play on any hard surface ideally with boards. Ball hockey rinks, and tennis courts are commonly used. Players use mallets commonly made of ski poles and plastic plumbing pipe to hit a road hockey ball into nets. There are a few rules consistent to hardcourt bike polo around the world.

  1. Your body cannot touch the ground. If your foot our any part of your body touches the ground it is called a “dab.” If you dab you must take yourself out of the play and bike over and touch designated “tap out” points on the sides of the court at which point you can return to the play.
  2. For a goal to count the ball must be hit into the net with the small round side of the mallet, not off the broad side of the mallet. If the ball is hit with the broad side of the mallet it’s called a “shuffle”
  3. Physical contact is allowed within reason when its “like to like”, that is to say “body to body”, “bike to bike”, “mallet to mallet.”

Who are the Mallets of Mayhem?

The Mallets of Mayhem are the first and currently only bike polo club in Ottawa. Ottawa got there first taste of hardcourt bike polo when three local bike couriers Angelo Sarizian, Alexis Mills, and Alan aka Lunchbox brought the game to town after seeing it played in Seattle. Currently the Mallets of Mayhem are the only hardcourt bike polo in Ottawa and we are open to new players. We play as much as possible. At this time we try to play every Tuesday and Friday after work, and Sunday afternoons. Out home court is located at Ev Tremblay Park at the corner of Beech and Champagne across from the Famous Dirienzo's Sandwich shop in the Kitchissippi Ward . Feel free to drop by and visit, come up and chat with us, or find our contact info in the contact section of the site. We are also on Facebook.
